Frequently Asked Questions

PNG if the image still has editing ahead of it, because it stores the decoded NEF losslessly and survives repeated saves without accumulating artefacts. JPG once the photo is finished, because it produces a file roughly a tenth the size for the same apparent quality on screen.

A 45.7 MP D850 or Z8 frame typically produces a 90–140 MB PNG, and a 24.5 MP Z6 III frame lands nearer 45–70 MB. PNG compresses losslessly, and photographic noise compresses poorly, so the result is frequently larger than the NEF it came from.
