Why Convert NEF to JPG?

Quality Note

Nikon NEF files contain 12–14 bits per channel. The conversion produces an 8-bit sRGB JPG that closely matches what Nikon’s ViewNX would output.

Frequently Asked Questions

NEF is Nikon’s RAW format, written by the Z mirrorless line (Z5, Z6, Z7, Z8, Z9, Zf, Zfc and the Z50 APS-C bodies) and by the F-mount DSLRs including the D850, D780, D500 and the D5 and D6 professional bodies. Nikon Coolpix compacts with RAW support write NEF as well.

Closely, but not exactly. KoalaPic decodes NEF using the white balance the camera recorded, so the overall colour balance matches. Nikon Picture Controls such as Vivid or Monochrome are applied to the camera’s own JPG preview and are not baked into the RAW data, so a NEF shot in Vivid converts to neutral colour here.

KoalaPic accepts files up to 50 MB. Lossless-compressed NEF from a 45.7 MP D850 or Z8 runs 45–60 MB and can cross that line, and uncompressed NEF is larger again. Set the camera to lossless compressed, or to High Efficiency on a Z8 or Z9, which roughly halves the file with no visible penalty.
