Yes. Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari 14+ all display WEBP, covering above 95% of live traffic. For a portfolio of 45 MP Nikon frames the payoff is real: WEBP at quality 85 is usually 25–35% smaller than a JPG that looks the same.

Support is uneven, so it is worth checking before switching. X, Facebook and Pinterest accept WEBP, while some publishing tools and email clients still expect JPG. WEBP is the better choice for your own site; keep JPG for uploads to platforms you do not control.

Lossy. A decoded NEF is photographic, and lossless WEBP on photographic detail produces files several times larger for no visible gain. Lossless WEBP is designed for screenshots, diagrams and images with text, none of which describe a Nikon sensor capture.

Very substantially. A 50 MB lossless-compressed NEF from a Z8 typically becomes a 2–4 MB WEBP at quality 85. Most of that reduction is not compression at all — it is the RAW file giving up its unprocessed sensor latitude once the image is rendered to 8-bit.
