Frequently Asked Questions

PNG stores the decoded image losslessly, so repeated editing and saving never accumulates compression artefacts. That makes it the safer intermediate while a photo is still being worked on. JPG is the better final format for sharing.

Not as converted here. KoalaPic decodes DNG to 8 bits per channel, so the PNG carries 16.7 million colours rather than the 12- to 16-bit depth a DNG can hold. PNG itself supports 16-bit, but the decoding step sets the ceiling.

A 12 MP phone DNG typically produces a 20–35 MB PNG, while a 60 MP Leica or Hasselblad file can exceed 150 MB. PNG compresses losslessly and photographic detail resists compression, so results are frequently larger than the DNG itself.

By default yes — GPS coordinates written by a phone or drone carry into the PNG along with the rest of the metadata. Use the strip GPS option before publishing if you do not want the capture location travelling with the image.
