How background removal works
KoalaPic removes an image background with U2-Net, a segmentation model that runs on our own servers rather than a third-party API. It separates the subject from everything behind it and writes the result with a transparent alpha channel, or fills the background with a colour you choose. It takes one click, needs no account, and the file is deleted an hour later.
What to expect
- Output with transparency must be PNG, WEBP or AVIF — JPG has no alpha channel and would fill the cut-out with white.
- You can replace the background with a solid colour instead of transparency, which keeps JPG a valid choice.
- Works best on a clear subject: people, products, animals and objects with a defined edge.
- Fine detail such as loose hair, glass and motion blur is where any automatic cut-out is weakest.
- Accepts files up to 50 MB, including HEIC and RAW camera files.
Is KoalaPic's background remover free?
Yes, and without a signup, a watermark or a resolution cap on the result. Anonymous use is rate limited to keep the service responsive; a free API key raises the limit if you need to process a batch.
Which format should I save a cut-out image in?
PNG for anything going into a document or a design tool, because it is lossless and universally read. WEBP is roughly 30% smaller at matching quality and every current browser displays it. AVIF is smaller still. All three keep the transparent background.
Does the background remover work on product photos?
Yes, and it is the case it handles most reliably: a single object against a plain or contrasting backdrop has the clean edge the model is looking for. Marketplace listings that require a white background are best produced by replacing the background with white rather than leaving it transparent.
Do you upload my image to a third-party AI service?
No. The model runs on KoalaPic's own servers, the file never leaves our infrastructure, and both the upload and the result are deleted one hour after processing.
