PNG stores the decoded ARW pixels losslessly, so repeated edit-and-save cycles never accumulate compression artefacts. That makes it the safer intermediate when a photo will pass through retouching. JPG is the better choice once the image is finished and headed for sharing.

Expect 80–120 MB. PNG compresses losslessly, and photographic detail compresses poorly, so a high-resolution Sony frame often produces a PNG larger than the ARW it came from. A 24 MP a7 IV frame lands nearer 30–45 MB.
