Quality Note

HEIC to PNG is a lossy-to-lossless conversion. The PNG output perfectly preserves whatever quality the original HEIC contained. Note that PNG files are significantly larger than the original HEIC (often 3-5× larger) because PNG uses lossless compression.

Frequently Asked Questions

HEIC uses advanced lossy compression (HEVC) while PNG is lossless. A 3 MB HEIC photo might become a 10-15 MB PNG because no image data is discarded.

Use PNG when you need transparency, when the image contains text or sharp edges (screenshots, logos), or when you plan to edit the image further and want to avoid cumulative compression loss.

HEIC can technically contain transparency, but iPhone photos typically don’t. If your HEIC file has an alpha channel, it will be preserved in the PNG output.

Yes by default. Camera model, lens, exposure settings and GPS coordinates carry into the PNG metadata. Use the strip GPS option before publishing if you do not want the capture location travelling with the image.
