How to crop an image on KoalaPic
KoalaPic crops an image by dragging a selection over it, or by entering exact pixel dimensions. It also crops for you: switch resizing to fill mode and it detects faces with OpenCV's YuNet model, then keeps them in frame instead of cutting from the centre. Formats a browser cannot display, such as HEIC and RAW, are previewed as JPG so you can still see what you are cropping.
What the cropper handles
- Drag to select, or type exact width and height in pixels; keyboard shortcuts nudge and resize the selection.
- Fill mode scales the image to cover your target size and then crops around the focal point, so nothing is distorted.
- Automatic focal point detection uses face detection, and falls back to the centre when no face is found.
- HEIC, TIFF, RAW, SVG and PDF inputs get a JPG preview, because browsers cannot render them directly.
- Accepts files up to 50 MB and images up to 16384 by 16384 pixels.
How do I crop a photo to an exact size in pixels?
Enter the width and height you need and choose fill mode. The image is scaled to cover those dimensions and then cropped to them, so you get exactly the size you asked for with the original proportions intact rather than a stretched image.
What is the difference between cropping and resizing?
Cropping removes part of the picture and keeps the remaining pixels at their original size. Resizing keeps the whole picture and changes how many pixels it is made of. Fill mode does both: it resizes to cover the target and crops away the overflow.
Can I crop a HEIC photo from my iPhone?
Yes. HEIC files are decoded and shown as a JPG preview, because no browser renders HEIC outside Safari. You crop against the preview and the crop is applied to the full-quality original, then written in whichever of the 11 output formats you pick.
Does cropping reduce image quality?
Cropping itself does not: the pixels that remain are the original pixels. Quality is only affected by the format you save to, so choose PNG or TIFF for a lossless result and JPG, WEBP or AVIF when file size matters more.
