Why Convert CR2 to PNG?

PNG preserves every pixel without lossy compression. While the files are larger than JPG, PNG is the best choice when you need to edit the image further or require transparency. Great for screenshots, compositing, and professional editing workflows.

How to Convert CR2 to PNG

1

Upload your CR2 file. KoalaPic accepts Canon RAW files up to 50 MB.

2

The RAW sensor data is decoded with camera white balance and converted to a lossless PNG.

3

Download the PNG file. Both files are deleted after 1 hour.

💡

Quality Note

PNG is lossless, so no quality is lost in the final compression step. The output preserves the full 8-bit sRGB rendering from the RAW decode.

Frequently Asked Questions

Because a CR2 stores one brightness value per photosite while a PNG stores three full colour channels per pixel after demosaicing, and PNG compresses losslessly. A 30 MB CR2 from a 5D Mark IV routinely becomes a 60–90 MB PNG.

PNG while the photo is still being edited, because it survives repeated saves without accumulating compression artefacts. JPG once it is finished, because it is roughly a tenth the size for the same apparent quality.

No. KoalaPic decodes CR2 to 8 bits per channel, so the PNG holds 16.7 million colours rather than the 14-bit-per-channel range of the original. The PNG is lossless from that point, but the recoverable shadow and highlight detail is fixed during decoding.

Not from the CR2 itself — a camera sensor records no alpha channel, so the PNG is opaque. PNG supports transparency, so run the background removal tool afterwards if you need a cut-out.
