Yes. WEBP at quality 85 is typically 25–35% smaller than a JPG of matching visual quality, which is the difference between a gallery of 24 MP Sony frames loading quickly on mobile data or not. Every current browser has supported WEBP since 2020.

Lossy. A decoded ARW is a photograph, and lossless WEBP on photographic detail produces files several times larger with no visible gain. Lossless WEBP earns its place on screenshots, line art and images containing text — not on Sony sensor output.

Rarely now. WEBP works in Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari 14+, covering above 95% of traffic. Internet Explorer and Safari 13 and earlier cannot display it, so keep a JPG fallback only if your analytics show meaningful traffic from those.

Dramatically. A 25 MB compressed ARW from an a7 IV becomes roughly a 1.5–3 MB WEBP at quality 85. Most of that is not compression — it is the RAW file discarding its unprocessed sensor latitude once the image is rendered to 8-bit.
