Frequently Asked Questions

DNG is Adobe’s open RAW standard, so it comes from an unusually wide range of hardware: Apple ProRAW on iPhone 12 Pro and later, Google Pixel, Samsung Expert RAW, DJI drones, Leica, Hasselblad, Pentax and Ricoh. Adobe DNG Converter also produces it from any other RAW format.

It is a RAW format, but a documented open one rather than a manufacturer’s private container. That is why a DNG from a Pixel, a drone and a Leica all decode with the same tooling, where CR3, NEF and ARW each need their own support.

Yes. Apple ProRAW and Google Pixel DNG files convert exactly like camera DNG. Phone DNG files are typically 10–25 MB, comfortably inside the 50 MB limit, and they carry the full sensor data rather than the processed JPG your phone also saved.

Not exactly. A phone’s camera app applies substantial computational processing — tone mapping, noise reduction, sharpening — to the JPG it displays, and a DNG holds the sensor data before most of that. Expect a flatter, more neutral image with more room to edit.
