Why Convert AVIF to JPG?

While AVIF delivers stunning compression ratios (often 50% smaller than JPG at the same quality), support is still growing. JPG works in every application ever made, making it the safe choice for sharing and compatibility.

How to Convert AVIF to JPG

1

Upload your AVIF image.

2

KoalaPic decodes the AVIF and encodes it as JPG at your chosen quality.

3

Download your universally compatible JPG file.

💡

Quality Note

AVIF uses significantly more efficient compression than JPG. Converting to JPG will increase file size substantially (often 2-3×), but ensures universal compatibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Because AVIF compresses roughly twice as efficiently. AVIF uses AV1 intra-frame coding with far more sophisticated prediction than JPG's 1992 design, so the same visual quality costs about half the bytes. Converting to JPG buys compatibility, not size.

AVIF is the AV1 Image File Format, published in 2019, which applies the AV1 video codec's intra-frame compression to still images. It supports transparency, HDR, wide colour gamut and animation, and typically halves file size against JPG.

Not quite. Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera and Safari 16.4 and later do, covering most current traffic, but Safari on iOS 16.3 and earlier cannot. Converting to JPG is the reliable way to reach everything, including older software outside the browser.

Slightly, because it is a second lossy encode on top of the first. At the default quality of 85 the loss is not visible in normal viewing. Convert from the original source rather than an AVIF if you still have it.
