How GIF Compression Works
GIF compression is inherently limited because the format only supports 256 colors and uses LZW lossless compression. Our optimizer strips metadata (comments, application extensions, XMP data) and re-encodes with optimal LZW settings. Savings are typically modest (5-20%) but guaranteed lossless.
Tips for GIF Compression
- For animated GIFs, consider converting to WEBP for much better compression
- GIF savings are modest compared to JPG/PNG — the format is already efficient
- If the GIF has fewer than 256 colors, savings may be minimal
- For better compression, convert to PNG (static) or WEBP (animated)
GIF Compression FAQ
Can I compress animated GIFs?
Our compressor handles static GIF images with lossless optimization. For animated GIFs, we recommend converting to WebP for significantly better compression.
How much can I compress a GIF?
Typically 5-20% for static GIFs. The GIF format is already quite compact. For dramatic savings, consider converting to PNG or WebP.
