Why Convert BMP to JPG?

BMP is a legacy format with no compression. The same image as JPG is typically 90-98% smaller with negligible quality difference for photos. JPG is universally supported and practical for every use case BMP serves.

How to Convert BMP to JPG

1

Upload your BMP file.

2

KoalaPic compresses to JPG at your chosen quality. Default 85% is excellent for photos.

3

Download your dramatically smaller JPG file.

Quality Note

BMP is uncompressed, so converting to JPG provides the biggest file size reductions of any conversion. A 10 MB BMP screenshot might become 200 KB as JPG.

Frequently Asked Questions

BMP stores every pixel uncompressed, so the size is simply width × height × 3 bytes plus a small header. A 1920 × 1080 BMP is 6.2 MB regardless of content, where the same image as JPG is typically 200–500 KB — the format applies no compression at all.

Rarely today. It survives in legacy Windows software, some imaging SDKs and embedded display systems that read nothing else. For storage or sharing, PNG gives identical lossless quality at a fraction of the size.

Some, because JPG is lossy — but at the default quality of 85 the difference is invisible for photographs. Screenshots, text and sharp-edged graphics fare worse, showing faint ringing around high-contrast edges, so choose PNG for those.

Typically 10 to 30 times smaller. A 6.2 MB Full HD BMP usually converts to a 200–500 KB JPG at quality 85. The exact ratio depends on detail: flat graphics compress hardest, busy photographic texture least.
